Homelan does Hegemonia

Posted in Homeworld by on July 28th, 2002

Jcal over at Homelan’s done a preview of Hegemonia: Legions of Iron. Yet another 3d space game being compared to Homeworld (and O.R.B. and Starmaggedon).

Relic Entertainment’s classic space based 3D real time strategy game Homeworld still looms as the standard for all the similarly themed games that have or will come afterwards. Earlier this year Lemon Interactive released Project Earth (or Starmaggedon if you lived in Europe) which in terms of looks didn’t really improve much on Homeworld’s graphics. Even Strategy First’s upcoming and long in development RTS game O.R.B. doesn’t appear to improve on Homeworld’s looks, at least according to the screenshots and the brief beta we have played with so far.

He goes on to mention how great the graphics look in the game, I however have to disagree. I checked out the last rolling-demo they released and I was of the impression that this was the first game that didn’t look better in 3d than it’s screenshots did. Perhaps I should try it again on my new rig… think it’ll look better on a GeForce 4 than on a GeForce 2? Let us all know in the comments.

Thanks to the multitude of people that forwarded a heads up for this item.

Homeworld:Play as a Group

Posted in Homeworld by on July 24th, 2002

I would like to extend an invitation for you to attend this weekend’s Homeworld:Play as a Group Event. Yes, that’s right, a weekend of Homeworlders getting together to do Homeworld all over again!

If you have any questions after reading that article, post a question in the comments of this post, or drop me a line. For more information, see the thread that started it all.

UPDATE: There’s a few of us online forging our way to Hiigara. If you want to join in the quest, I’m uploading my savegames to here. I’m playing a Kushan fleet balanced between fighters and cap ships so far.

UPDATE2: JAL has forwarded his new True Scale version. You can get it here. We’ve made it to the Gardens so far… still time to catch up!

UPDATE3: People are just starting Level 16 - Hiigara. Total time so far is about 10 hours from launch to finish.

UPDATE4: Wow, great game. Just over 11 hours including a crash and a restart of a level due to a bug. Check here to see the Level 16 End Savegame. She still holds up well over the years. People are still playing HW, and most likely will be this weekend for a while longer. So pop on by IRC (us.austnet.org, channel #HWPAAG) to find out how people are doing, and to get hints and/or help.

Real IC?

This in from Mokona, who got it from somewhere… and since I don’t know if I’m breaking any copy right laws, please tell me where this article is from.

Have a read!

Hmmmm Llamel.

JAL-18’s True Scale Mod

Posted in Homeworld by on July 22nd, 2002

As it stands right now… things aren’t as they seem. When you play the original version of Homeworld, you are not actually playing with ships that are properly scaled. Basically Homeworld increases the sizes of certains ships when you zoom out so it’s easier to play the game. Recent threads on the Relic forums have prompted people to clamor for a Homeworld Mod that lets them play the game with ships that are scaled correctly.

JAL-18 stepped up to the bat, and has put together a relatively simple mod that removes the artificial scaling from Homeworld. Relicnews is proud to provide this zip file containing the mod. Feel free to download it and view the Truescale MOD Readme.txt file that is included for more information.

Check it out. Thanks Mokona for the heads up.

New Guru Site

Posted in General by on July 10th, 2002

Normally I stay away from stuff like clan news, but the Guru’s have launched their new website. Warning, it will take over your browser temporarity (goes fullscreen). It’s full on flash 6 and quite sexy, in spite of it’s bland and dark color scheme. Head on by and check it out!

New Creature Feature

Posted in Impossible Creatures by on July 10th, 2002

Gamespy has put up a new write up of 6 wacky combos (all of which would fall to my army) in their latest IC feature
Shobster Combining the most dangerous of sharks with the most delicious of decapods is bound to be a recipe for melee devastation. Even without the telltale dorsal fin, this predator is a threat to any body of water. In fact, the lobster torso and legs allow it to move almost as fast on land. Beaches are no longer a safe refuge for sunbathing henchmen and enemy units. Piercing pincers and serrated incisors enable the Shobster to quickly and efficiently pave a path through any barrier.
Thanks to Quicksloth for the find

Relic Hiring for HW2 Team

Posted in Homeworld 2 by on July 9th, 2002

Looks like Relic’s advertising that they’re hiring to fill a “Senior Gameplay Programmer” position for HW2.

Check out the note that was dropped here on the forums.

Check the official listing here (click “View All Careers” in the upper left, then click “Senior Game Programmer”).

ps. This shirt is from E3 2001, so don’t take it literally.

RN Site update

Posted in General by on July 8th, 2002

Just a quick update about the site folks. Overflow finished off a newer version of our supporting script system. You should notice that you can stay logged into the site once you log in now. In addition, someone created a new poll (so register and vote!). There’s also been some more backend changes that you probably won’t see. If you do see anything wrong, please let us know.

Thanks again to Overflow for the awesome work on the scripts… now we just need to get Marv at Telefragged to allow us to upload pictures via http and we’ll be good to go.

ps. Yesterday it was Pike’s birthday, so Happy Birthday Pik0r (and MadHatter too!)

fox - w00t! No more logging in every time! flowie rox!
