IC Review @ Gaming Nexus

Posted in Impossible Creatures by on January 31st, 2003

Gaming Nexus has slapped up its review of IC:
The main challenge in Impossible Creatures is to decide beforehand which types of units to send into a given situation. All of the traditional RTS unit types are available—fliers, swimmers, ranged, melee, and artillery. Scouting ahead is vital to determine which is the most appropriate combination of animals and units to send, because once the battle is joined, it’s usually too late to switch tactics.
They give it an 8.1 out of 10. Thanks to the shack

Alex on TV

Looks like Alex is on TV today. Specifically, on G4TV with the Girls of Gaming. Looks like he’s discussing Impossible Creatures with them. For more details, check out this page at G4tv. If I was Pax, I’d make witty and lurid comments about Alex, girls, and an “amazing” interview.

Thanks to JesusHasAGun for the heads up.

IC Review @ Adrenaline Vault

AV scores it 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Contrary to popular belief, humans have little fear of the unknown — few of us even possess the faculties of imagination required to even conceive of it. Instead, variations of the known are the inroads to our fears, mere differences in scale and arrangement forming the dragons, gorgons, and chimeras that plagued the nightmares of our ancestors. Upton Julius, the arch-foe of Relic’s Impossible Creatures, has a firm grasp of this concept as he dismisses the notion that his biological combinations are mere “crossbreeds.” Instead, he sees them as distillations of terror, amalgamations of fear after fear, weapons of both cruelty and malice.

IC Review @ TechTV

IC Scores 4 out of 5 stars at TechTV.

On this “Extended Play” we delve into a new take on the classic concept of “man vs. nature” with “Impossible Creatures.” Developed by Relic, the company responsible for 1999’s “Homeworld,” this PC title puts an innovative science fiction spin on the real-time strategy genre. Rather than relying on a standard selection of preconfigured units, the game lets players mix and match various species from the animal kingdom to hatch an assortment of “Impossible Creatures.” Take that, Dr. Moreau.

IC Review @ Total Games

Total Games Score, 50%.

Impossible Creatures is one of those games that seems to have been in development forever. When the games media were first introduced to the game’s basic concept – to create an army of hybrids by cross-breeding exotic animals – people were understandably excited. The thought of sending horned elephants or dolphins with scorpion-like stingers into battle is, after all, an enticing one. However, the game was always going to need more than just that in order to really impress and despite the many months spent in development, it seems that developers Relic have failed to deliver.

IC Review @ Gameplanet NZ

Gameplanet NZ’s score? 4 out of 5 fists!

RELIC ENTERTAINMENT MIGHT NOT have been around for very long, but it’s not like they have no experience making killer strategy games - Homeworld anyone? Combine that sort of legacy with the killer concept of being able to mix and match animal parts to create custom fighting units and you have a guaranteed winner. Don’t you? Let’s take a look…

IC Online is back Up.

Posted in Impossible Creatures by on January 27th, 2003

Well, it looks like IC Online is now back up and running again. So go and play!

Also, Alex Garden dropped by the forums and did indeed confirm that the downtime was due to the SQL worm.

IC Online is Down

Posted in Impossible Creatures by on January 26th, 2003

As many of you might have noticed, the IC Online service is currently unavailable. While neither Relic or Microsoft has commented on the situation (most likely since it’s the weekend), it appears that the downtime is due to the SQL worm/virus that hit the net yesterday. So be patient, IC online should be back soon…

IC Review @ UGO

UGO reviews IC and gives it a B+.

Set in the 1930s, Impossible Creatures is a 3D, real-time strategy game that pits the player against an evil villain in a desperate campaign across a chain of remote and diverse islands. With a strong backing from Microsoft Game Studios, and with Relic Entertainment’s own Alex Garden on the job, Impossible Creatures was conceived with the intention of redefining the RTS genre. Does it live up to the expectations?
