Sphinx’s Sanitarium Review

Posted in Homeworld 2 by on September 30th, 2003

No score, but Sphinx seems to have put up a mostly positive review of Homeworld 2.

Nothing captures the imagination like outer space. Traveling the stars, exploring new points across the universe and expanding your mind with knowledge and wisdom. Fortunately, Homeworld 2 ignores that part of the cosmos and gets to the real meat and potatoes of what we all want: annilihating bad guys by the bushel. With a fully three dimensional environment, an easy to use interface, and an excellent storyline, Homeworld 2 provides excellent gameplay and kicks the snot out of any other RTS to date.

Worth Playing Review

Posted in Homeworld 2 by on September 30th, 2003

Worth Playing has reviewed HW2. They found it was worth 85% and an editor’s choice award.

Overall, Homeworld 2 is one of the most refreshing and original strategy games out there, and the beautifully rendered scenery and wonderfully orchestrated sounds gives the game an additional adrenaline boost. But as impressive, epic, immersive, and detailed as Homeworld 2 is, it is still only an evolutionary step forward over its predecessor. But since the original game was so ahead of its time, Homeworld 2’s somewhat negligible level of evolution can be easily forgiven. Suffice to say that if you liked Homeworld you’ll fall in love with part two, and since the interface and aesthetics have been improved, fans of the RTS genre in general should also have a great time with it.

HW2 In German Magazine

Posted in Homeworld 2 by on September 29th, 2003

Espy sends in this note:

The German mag “PC Games” has a 3 1/2 page review of HW2 plus a video on the DVD. They gave it a score of 84%, saying it is a must-buy for any Sci-Fi fan, and that it was miles ahead of O.R.B. and Haegemonia in just about every aspect except the graphics (reflections and exact shadows in Haegemonia). Apart from that: great atmosphere, great music, very impressive graphics and effects and the simple interface. The reviewer also noted the very high difficulty level and complained about the unit cap in SP. Despite the criticism, the game is highly recommended.

Gamespot HW2 Guide

Posted in Homeworld 2 by on September 29th, 2003

Gamespot’s got a HW2 Walkthrough and Strategy Guide type deal uploaded. I have had a short read through, and it seems pretty good. Especially useful for people might be the Counters List. You do require a free Gamespot membership to read it.

Check it out here.

Note to Doug, you need to update the walkthrough to M15 (I do not have your email address here).

Game Raiders Review

Posted in Homeworld 2 by on September 29th, 2003

Game Raiders have done a review of HW2 as well. They snuck out of the temple with a score of 98/100 (my averaging of his sub scores shows a 93%. I guess it got bonus points?).

If you liked the original and it’s expansion, or if you like RTS titles and you’d like to try Homeworld 2, you will not be disappointed. Shoot, even if you just like space and you hate RTS games, Homeworld 2 will have you parked in front of your computer for days. This game is simply to enthralling, to impressive to look at and too fun to pass up.

Computer Games Romania Review

Posted in Homeworld 2 by on September 29th, 2003

Computer Games Romania has a review up of HW2. Total score, 88%.

Relic had a very difficult task of creating a sequel at least as good as its predecessor. And I am glad to say that, for most part, they did it, although the single-player mode and mission design leave the impression that they were rushed. Despite this, Homeworld 2 is as good as its famed precursor, being one of the best Real Time Strategies of this year. But is it better than Homeworld? Well, only you can decide that, after you will play it.

Check it out here. Be warned that the reviewer has taken a LOT of spoiler screens and put them into the review. You can’t miss them really.

Greyed out Games on Gamespy

Posted in Homeworld 2 by on September 28th, 2003

There has been a lot of folks having trouble with hosting gamespy games if they are behind a router. I am one of the people that was having problems as well, so when I saw this, I immediately was pretty excited by this news…

Thanks to the hexediting of someone (Drax from CORP reportedly), it looks like there is now a workaround available for some of the Greyed out games! Drax apparently hexedited a single word out of the gslobby.dll file (localip%d), and replaced it with another (publicip%d).

It looks like even though only a small section of the file changed, the game still spits out a version error if you try to connect up with a user that has the original file (checksums or somesuch). Everyone tries to join the game must have the same version on their system.

Check out the background info, and the fix here. Original thread on this was here.
