Rhett Brewer Interview

Posted in Homeworld 2 by on November 18th, 2003

HWU has done an interview with Rhett Brewer, the vocalist on some of the HW2 music tracks.

HWU: Can you describe the recording process for Homeworld 2, was it done from your London home or were you required to fly to the United States or Canada to complete the project? RB: Actually the Homeworld2 soundtrack was recorded entirely in Vancouver, Canada. Although Paul Ruskay and I discussed ideas prior to my arrival, the soundtrack for Homeworld2 evolved out of a very intuitive working relationship. I flew in from London and developed ideas during the live orchestral recording session with members of the Vancouver Symphony. Then Paul and I set about recording the vocals over the course of 4 days. Paul would play me each track, and then I would develop a vocal sound and melodic line for each theme as we went.

Check out their interview here.

Review at Adrians Rojak Pot

Posted in Homeworld 2 by on November 13th, 2003

Perhaps the largest (page wise) review of HW2 out there yet. Adrian’s reviewer Brian picks the game apart, yet still gives it an A+ mark.

Overall, I find this game to be very well done. It really deserves all the accolades it has received.

Personally, I enjoyed it so much because it was challenging and yet not exceedingly difficult. I actually finished the entire game in about 12 hours! In fact, I find that Homeworld : Cataclysm and the original Homeworld games are harder to win.

However, it will prove to be a challenge if not played properly. Still, with a proper understanding of the game’s mechanics as well as the units available to you, you should have no problem figuring out how to make full tactical use of them and winning the game.

All in all, Homeworld 2 gets an A+ grade in my book. I just can’t help wishing there were more missions. But since the fifteen missions tell the story in a nice flow, there is no reason to prolong it with superfluous missions. After all, [spoiler!] it looks like there will be a Homeworld 3! And if that comes true, you can be sure of a review here at Adrian’s Rojak Pot!

Patch News

Posted in Homeworld 2 by on November 12th, 2003

Work on a patch for Homeworld 2 has unofficially begun it seems.

Here’s some information that has been stated a couple of times before but in the course of time might have been lost or forgotten. I present it to you in a glamorous one-sided Q&A session.

1. Do we want to release a patch? Yes.

2. Does Sierra control the release and content of patches? Yes.

3. Are we therefore bound by Sierra’s wishes/schedule with regards to changes/fixes to Homeworld 2? Yes.

3. Have we suggested a list of fixes to Sierra? Yes.

4. Have they sent us their list of fixes? Yes.

5. Have we started fixing them? Yes.

6. Have we finalized that list to the point where we can discuss it? No.

7. Will we have this list finalized in the very near future? Yes.

8. Does this mean that a patch is in fact in the works and planned for release soon? Hell yes.

There is more to be read in Geoff’s post here.

Review at Boomtown.net

Posted in Homeworld 2 by on November 10th, 2003

Boomtown.net’s reviewed HW2. 8 out of 10 final score.

When you send your fighters out on the attack they intelligently swoop past their enemies in a flight pattern so that they can empty their guns into them and then retreat to a distance to recharge and come back for another pass. They will even draw the enemy away from your mothership, if they get too close for comfort and take the fight away slightly. The computer controlled opponents use a similar level of intelligence to fight your ships though, so don’t feel that you can just leave your fighters to their own devices and you’ll be guaranteed a win. In skirmish fights the computer will attack with ever increasing numbers of fighters until they wear you down, putting the pressure on you to take the offensive first and get in a decent squad before the computer can get the upper hand. The computer plays a very intelligent game, as you would expect from a modern RTS title, and you need to use all of the features that 3D space offers you to retain the upper hand.
