End of an Era

The day has come, Alex Garden is no longer associated with THQ and likely Relic. We’ll miss you Alex! sniff

Computer Games Magazine has learned that Alex Garden, the founder of Relic Entertainment and later the Director of Product Development at Relic’s eventual owner THQ, has now left the publisher to work on other unnamed projects, according to a statment from THQ.

According to an automated email sent from Garden’s THQ email address, Garden’s last day at THQ was Monday, Jan. 31. Emails sent to the new email address provided by Garden have so far gone unanswered. According to a statement sent to Computer Games Magazine by THQ, Garden “wrapped up his projects for us, including facilitating the transition through the Relic acquisition, and is now focusing on projects apart from THQ.

Garden founded Vancouver based Relic Entertainment in the mid-1990s and the developer hit the ground running with its debut title Homeworld for publisher Sierra/VUGames in 1999. The 3D space based RTS title was a critical success winning a large number of Game of the Year awards for that year. The game spawned a stand alone expansion Homeworld: Cataclysm (developed by Barking Dog Studios) in 1990 and a full fledged sequel, Homeworld 2, was released by Relic in 2003. Eariler that same year saw the developer released another unusual RTS game, Impossible Creatures, for publisher Microsoft.

Relic was already well into development of their next project, the Games Workshop based RTS game Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War for publisher THQ before the publisher decided to buy Relic in April 2004. Garden left as CEO of Relic to head to THQ’s headquarters as their Director of Product Development. Dawn of War was released last fall and Relic received both critical acclaim and solid sales for the game. THQ hinted in their quarter financial conference call Tuesday that a sequel to Dawn of War may be in the works.

NOTE: A SEQUEL TO DAWN OF WAR MAY BE IN THE WORKS.
