Apparently Soul spotted the Gamespot awards for E3 and didn’t bother to post them here… so I shall do it for him.

Company of Heroes @ Gamecloud

Posted in Company of Heroes by on May 26th, 2005

Gamecloud’s done a review of the E3 demos of Company of Heroes.

The biggest selling point of Company of Heroes in our E3 demo was the sheer destruction shown. The French village at the center of the demo was reduced to near total rubble by the time the demo was finish. Village walls crumbled under tank fire. Soldiers flew into the air via mortar shells. Even the ground exhibited craters that were generated by real shells. Of course, all of this means that the typical strategies employed by most RTS games go straight out the window in this game. No longer will players feel comforted hiding behind a wall or rock that can’t be blown up even by a nuclear blast.

Company of Heroes in Gamespy E3 Awards

Posted in Company of Heroes by on May 26th, 2005

Company of Heroes has arrived at #14 on Gamespy’s E3 Games list. It’s the 6th ranked PC game at the show.

Miguel: I’m usually the last person to go nuts over World War II games, but damn if it wasn’t love at first sight with Company of Heroes. Maybe a large part of it is me marveling at just how impressive the technology behind it is, but I feel that Company of Heroes is a pretty clear vision of what the RTS games we’ll be playing a couple of years from now will look like: super-detailed, built around impressive, dynamic systems, and mindful of all the design innovations that have worked their way into the genre in the past few years.

Check it out here.

Similar to the Winter Assault Live Stage demo, Gamespot has also put up the Company of Heroes live stage demo, which you can view here. Answering questions is Jay Wilson, one of the designers on CoH. Unfortunately, there’s not much new game footage in this one, actually none at all, the gameplay footage consists only of the already released E3 Trailer being played in a loop, it is however definitely worth viewing, as Jay gives a fair bit of insight into CoH’s gameplay mechanics.

You can discuss the video here.

Winter Assault Gamespot Live Stage Demo

Posted in Dawn of War by on May 21st, 2005

Gamespot has a 15 minute video of the Winter Assault stage demo up on their site (very similar to the one we released yesterday), with Relic’s Jonathan Dowdeswell walking the audience through the demo itself and answering a number of questions regarding WA. You can view the video from this page, and discuss it here.

While browsing Blue’s I noticed that both IGN and Gamespy have slapped up their impressions/previews of Company of Heroes. Both putting a very positive spin on what they saw. Here’s a blurb from the Gamespy article:

Anyway, yeah, the graphics. The game looks amazing, and frankly, it was difficult to focus on anything else throughout the course of the demo. At the start, the camera captured a closer-up view of the platoon under the demoer’s control. According to him, they were acting just like they would in the game — that is to say, all the impressive behaviors and animations they were exhibiting weren’t specifically programmed for that intro sequence. As they walked to their engagement, they chattered amongst themselves, fidgeted with their equipment, and reacted to the changes in their terrain. The level of detail in each individual model was evident, too; tiny touches, like rank insignias on their uniforms, were fully rendered, and their individual faces were mighty impressive, for a game in which dozens like them will be present onscreen at once. Once the intro was over, the camera pulled back into the standard bird’s-eye RTS perspective, and the action began.

And here’s one from the IGN article:

In the end I walked away from the demonstration with a sense that Relic had just shown me the future of the genre, though before even seeing the game, I had my doubts. Most of these doubts stemmed from the use of World War II in a strategy title yet again. There have been so many of these titles at this point that it’s hard not to be bored of them, even though the subject matter itself is supremely interesting. I thought I was tired of World War II, but the demo changed my mind. The guys at Relic are pretty secure in their choice as well, stating its easy accessibility thanks to a highly recognizable setting. Apparently people just understand the gravity of World War II better and actually destroying a realistic little town somewhere in France (or some other real world setting) holds more weight than some futuristic nowhere. I’m not sure I totally agree with that in all ways, but I can certainly see their point.

I also notice, while browsing the forums, that there’s a hands-on preview of CoH up at ActionTrip (Thanks KON Air). As always, here’s a quote:

The main thing about the demo as far as I’m concerned was the completely destructible environment. Huge chunks of building fall off as tank grenades detonate and basically, the environment feels like a real battlefield. In the words of the Relic designer, “if you run into an obstacle, and you can’t get past it, just turn it into a pile of dust and rubble.”

And if that wasn’t enough CoH coverage for you, Relic News’ Someguy has also posted his first day impressions of CoH, which you can find here.

As always, you can discuss all these developments in the Company of Heroes section of the Relic Forums.

Dawn of War : WA E3 Coverage @ Gamespy

Posted in Dawn of War by on May 20th, 2005

The folks over at Gamespy have slapped up their impressions of Winter Assault based on what they saw at this year’s E3. Here’s a snip from said article:

The most impressive unit showcased by far, however, would have to be the Baneblade. It’s the Imperial Guard’s “über unit,” and one look at it makes this very clear: it’s an enormous tank, the size of a city block, with 11 individual guns mounted on it. Presumably, it will excel at destroying things and surviving onslaughts. Hopefully, the costs associated with fielding the unit will mirror its offensive capabilities.

Thanks to Blue’s.
