Winter Assault Review @ Gamezone

Posted in Dawn of War by on October 25th, 2005

There’s a review of Winter Assault up at Gamezone. It’s not telling us anything new, just confirming what we know. Winter Assault is awesome. 9.0 out of 10.

Winter Assault improves upon the already solid original game, offering up improved multiplayer, a great new campaign and a brand new faction to play as. All things considered, Winter Assault is a great addition to Dawn of War, and fans of the original shouldn’t be disappointed.

Man, I bet being awesome must just totally suck.

Is it me, or does Winter Assault suck? This expansion pack just took a good thing to a crappy place. It’s too fast, Imperial Guard are too powerful, and all the new skirmish maps are pretty much the same. It now seems as if it’s about pumping out whatever you can afford just to survive, rather than tactics. I tried to give it a chance. I bought it when it came out and have play tested ever since. Now I find my self not really wanting to play DoW anymore. And that is amazing, because since DoW came out, I’ve been plaing it and enjoying it ever since. WINTER ASSAULT SUCKS!!!!

It’s you.

Ok, I’m not denying that I suck. But let’s have an intelligent correspondence. I gave my reasons for not liking Winter Assault. What are your reasons for thinking that it dosen’t suck? I hope that you are not just trying to antagonize me because I said something bad about Winter Assault.

Not at all. By “it’s you” I meant that you don’t like the game not because the game sucks, but because Winter Assault doesn’t cater to your personal taste in games.
If nobody liked the game then yes, one could state that it sucks. However considering that the sales for WA are almost twice as high as those for most other expansions I think we can safely conclude that a sufficient number of people like Winter Assault.

Andrew:

I think you got used to the weaker AI in Dawn of War. They seriously ramped up the AI in Winter Assault. It’s far better practice against the AI now for playing online IMO.

They ramped up the AI?
they made the AI either pathetic or impossible, on eaay they just run away and turtle till you kill them, and on standard it has to be 1-on-1 otherwise they gang up and you dont stand a chance as your allies just do there own thing.
They destroyed the good AI that was in DoW

I think you’re pretty much the only one who thinks that, the general consensus on the forums seems to be that the AI in vanilla DoW was not all that bright.

I agree with TigerDude. On easy it’s pathetic. On standard I just pump out whatever I can afford just to survive while my computer allies do their own thing. I’m lucky if I get to survive without leaving my own base. What fun is that when you can’t even leave your own base? I’m not an online player, just a casual gamer who likes WH40K. I’m not gonna play against others online. And I think that what they have done with Winter Assault is cater more to the hardcore online gamer which has left casual gamers like me soured.

“Hardcore” online gamers are (not all of them, mind you) complaining that WA was dumbed down for the casual gamer.

I do play online, and while im not an expert player i can at least hold my own, but often thats because i can back up my allies and them back up me. offline you cant do that, so when a force 3x the size you could have attacks you, you just get swamped by sheer numbers.

like i said there no problem in 1v1 but when you need an allie to support you its just not gonna happen

Any suggestions then Moe? I’m tired of getting my ass handed to me no matter who I play. What is one to do when you are swamped by multiple enemies? I play diffrent armies, and I vary my tactics. But it just feel that I’m constantly being singled out by my enemies. Especially against the Imperial Guard. With their long range and lethal firepower, it is almost impossible to do anything against them once they have their sights set on you. How do you counter Imperial Guard troops when they have a massive amount of infantry and they are coming after you?

I would recommend signing up no the forums (if you haven’t done that already) and posting a thread about your problem in DoW strategy - I’m sure someone more qualified then myself will be able to help you out.
