Relicnews: the definitive source for all things Relic

Relic’s biggest fan contest 2008 is accepting submissions until Friday.

Last year, Goldo_0 won with this entry (100 MB download). Not only did he get a free trip to Vancouver, he got a job at Relic!

Get your submissions in, and good luck to whoever wins!

A new video has showed up on Youtube last evening. I’ll say that it’s pretty darn impressive watching big angry giant robots slug it out against the horde of orcs.

Homeworld Inspired Space Shooter?

Posted in Homeworld, Homeworld 2, Cataclysm by on September 13th, 2007

It’s my duty as a Homeworld fan to send these three videos your way…

Video 1 - latest trailer.
Video 2 - shorter trailer.
Video 3 - Russian Trailer, much longer, shows lots of gameplay.

Looks to be a space type shooter, customizable fighters, PC only title that’s due out in September. Anyone know more about it?

It seems the environments, music and overall game style is very much inspired by Homeworld. Very cool!

Update: There’s a Demo here! (It’s entirely Russian though). Thanks to Delphy for the heads up.

Homeworld and Cataclysm WON Servers

Posted in Homeworld, Cataclysm by on August 22nd, 2007

Update from Elorran (a moderator on the Sierra forums). The Homeworld and Cataclysm WON servers are down and techs are working on them. No ETA on their return.

Edit 8/26/2007 - Looks like they’re back up!

There’s a thread running on the forums about people’s recollections of the Relic Open House. If you haven’t already, pop in and have a read. If you visited Relic for the open house, and haven’t posted your impressions yet, go for it!

Relic didn’t announce any new games, expansions or anything like that, but we did get to find out they have several teams working on various projects. Watch here for an article (once approved - NDA issues), about my recollections for the weekend.

Homeworld Shipyards Lives!

Posted in Homeworld, Homeworld 2, Cataclysm by on March 3rd, 2006

I’m still a huge fan of the Homeworld series, and Arioch’s Homeworld Shipyards was one of my favorite places to visit. Recently, he had to take down his Shipyards page due to space restrictions. Well, I got to thinking… “Hey, Delphy got big new servers with lots of space, I wonder if we can host them and Arioch would want to take us up on the offer?”.

Turns out we can and he did.

Welcome aboard Arioch!

DoW Preview @ GameArena

Posted in Cataclysm by on July 17th, 2004

GameArena has put together a preview of Dawn of War, which you can view here. Here’s a short blurb, which nicley sums up the authors view:
This is going to be huge; the ease of play of Ground Control II with the depth of Warcraft III – if Relic can get the unit balance right, this could very well be bigger than that Half Life 2 thing. Keep your eyes peeled for our review, due around its September-October release date.
Thanks to bobc7 for the heads up, you can discuss the preview here.

DoW Preview at Etoychest.org

Posted in Cataclysm by on July 16th, 2004

Check out this preview at Etoychest.

Let me start off by saying I have never played the tabletop game Warhammer 40,000, nor have I delved into the apparently deep fiction of the franchise. I have, however, played RTS games since I was a kid. Warcraft was one of the first PC games I ever played, and I still play Starcraft, what I consider one of the greatest games ever put on a disc. That said, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is the best RTS I’ve played since Starcraft. The game, which is still in the stages of development and is quite incomplete, is already an amazingly fun game.

Pretty high praise there…

Action Vault Homeworld2 Team Q&A #1

Posted in Cataclysm by on July 4th, 2003

As I get in from Vegas, I find a news bit that’s not been posted about yet.

Action Vault’s got a Q&A up with various members of the HW2 team.

Here’s a bit to entice you.

Action Vault: Homeworld2 has been described as an evolutionary real-time strategy title rather than a revolutionary one. What do you think about this, and in your personal opinion, what are some of the notable changes of either type?

We’ve tried to keep the great elements from the first game - the story, the amazing artwork and the sheer fun of controlling a huge fleet of space ships, while still improving the areas that were weak. For me, the biggest improvement is the use of panels for building and researching. In Homeworld, having more than one battle going on while trying to keep your units building was quite a tough task. When you throw in more than one production ship the player starts to feel overwhelmed.

With the Homeworld2 system, you can change and monitor your builds while keeping an eye on the map or a battle; add on the improved unit AI, and the game becomes a lot easier to control. Now, people can concentrate on strategy or managing a battle without feeling like they are losing control over the other parts of the game.

Thanks to Arioch for the heads up.
