Interview: Capture the Flag mod by Ruosteinen

Lately a beta for multiplayer Capture the Flag mode for vanilla Dawn of War was released by Ruosteinen. I caught up with him on IRC, to explain what the mod does and what he’s might be up to in the future.

[Finaldeath] Hello Ruosteinen, would you care to introduce yourself and what you’re modding at the moment?

[Ruosteinen] Hi. Well, I’ve been playing DoW since April 2005, and been a member of the FPL since about June. My first and current mod is essentially an adaptation of a Capture The Flag style of game, which is usually found on most FPS games. The basic premise is that you have to escort a “flag” back to your base 5 times to win the game, and this can be played alongside Control Area, Annihilate, types as well.

[FD] Do you need anything special to play the new gameplay mode?

[Ruo]Apart from the mod-files, which at the moment are very small, the only thing you’ll need are some other people to play with.

[FD] What special features might you include in later releases of the Capture the Flag gameplay mode?

[Ruo] The initial release will be quite basic, but I do hope to add more things as time passes. One such thing will be a custom-made model for the flag, since at the moment I just use the Colonel Brom model. I’ve had some fairly ambitious ideas too, which involve giving options for how many points are needed to win, or an option whereby you score a point by holding the flag for a certain number of minutes instead. There are more ideas even know if some of these things can be done yet, never mind thought about how to do them, so this is thinking much further into the future.

[FD] Are you going to create any other new multiplayer game modes?

[Ruo] Actually, just today I was thinking about other adaptations from FPS games, and I’ve started to consider a King of the Hill mod too, where you’d have to be the only troops to occupy a certain area of the battlefield for a minute or so, with a points scoring system like in Capture the Flag. I’m not sure how this would work out at all, but I’ll definitely see what happens with it at some point.

[FD] What is your current favourite mod (apart from CTF!) for Dawn of War, and do you find much time to play it?

[Ruo] Most of my time playing DoW is spent with 2 other friends, playing against AI teams of various sizes and difficulties, so for that the Dawn of Skirmish mod is essential. I think it’s great. I usually manage to fit in a game or two of that each night, but apart from that I’m usually fiddling with CTF or trying (in vain) to come up with a map design that I like.

[FD] And finally, is there anything else you wish us to know?

[Ruo] No, just look out for the thread on the Relic forums for any updates and releases! And maybe I’ll force another mention on this newsletter when it’s finished. ;)

Thanks a lot Ruosteinen! I played a game of CTF with him afterwards (of course, losing) but ultimately it adds an excellent new dimension to the game, and is well worth playing with some friends!
