Welcome again to Chronica Modificatus, the Relicnews Dawn of War modding newsletter.
This hopefully will become a regular update of various modification teams that work hard on adding races, units, maps and other things to Dawn of War!
Each issue we’ll have some news of updates from what people are up to, and some features on the different teams and modders, hopefully with some insights in how they are getting along and something interesting for modders and non-modders alike.
If you have anything to add to the next issue or have any queries, contact Finaldeath by PM, thanks!
Modding News
New mod releases
January has brought around some new playable beta’s from different mod teams, with offerings from the Tau race, Space Hulk, Space Marine Armoury, Uberpainter Mod, Depth of Hersy: Cadian Gate and of course DOW Pro.
The Tau Mod team has provided the latest working beta version 1.5 of thier mod - with many new models, animations and sounds and compatible with the latest version of the game (compatible only with Winter Assault 1.41). Expect updates in the future to fix balance issues and add more content. You can find this mod at the Relicnews Bittorrent mirror..
Very recently, the Space Hulk mod team has provided Space Hulk Co-Op in a new download (for Winter Assault 1.41) which includes skirmish Co-op Space Hulk action, and includes a new force to control - the famous Necrons - just make sure you play online with your friends to enjoy it the most, the AI isn’t complete for AI allies.
And with a welcome update, the Space Marine Armoury is updated for DOW v1.41 and Winter Assault. This mod expands the Space Marine units to include Rhino variants and Landspeeder varients, although balance may be an issue, since this is not a balanced addition to the game!
The Uberpainter Mod by IBBoard is released and includes versions for winter assault and dawn of war - allowing previews of every unit in the game for you to check your colour schemes.
Chaos, IG and Space marines get a new beta release in the form of Depth of Heresy: Cadian Gate who released beta version v0.4.3 of their mod (from their forum thread where you can provide feedback), for both DOW and WA, adding some new models, units and stat changes for Chaos Marines, Imperial Guard and Space Marines.
Lastly, DOW Pro team has released version 1.51 includes new fixes and balancing - if you don’t know about the mod, it frequently updates balance issues associated with the game - playing it is playing an entirely different (And some will say more balanced) game! You can find this mod at the Relicnews Bittorrent mirror too, but only v1.5. Check thier website for constant updates to the mod!
Mods Update Roundup…
Mods have decided to release quite a few updates on their progress, including many screenshots and some movies. No one provided anything especially for the newsletter, but there is a lot of forum activity with the new mod tools being released and Christmas being over.
Firstly, Eclipse of Existence has an update regarding the status of the mod and that they have finished a lot of models, decided the techtree and that there will be no beta - so expect a fully complete Necron mod sometime in 2006! See their website for screenshots and movie updates.
Next, the Witch Hunters, Codex: Adeptus Soroitas have been making progress, see this post in their thread for a link to a demo movie on animations they’ve done, and this post for screenshots of the very cool Armorium, completed when they did an interview at www.dawnofwar.de.
Space-marine lovers rejoice, the Honour the Astartes mod released some shots of their Lightning-Claw clad Terminators, in their thread (where there are many more screenshots), making the already cool looking very much more complete.
Even as a quite new team, the Enslavers mod team has provided a screenshot the first textured model from the team, in their topic - which might well be the first you’ve heard of this mod. Check the thread for more concept art and info.
Along with the lightning claw terminators, Space Marine players get more stuff to wait for, as the Crusade of Redemption (Black Templar and Chaos Betrayers) mod team have released several screenshots of progress, and be sure to check their forums for more updates.
Lots of vehicles are planned in the Imperial Armor mod, decides to add new vehicles to Dawn of War for all races, and have some screenshots (which I missed last newsletter) and news that they’ll provide an update of thier progress very soon.
For those who are fans of the Survival Mode mod will be welcome to know that Argonought has planned a release of a Space Marine survival mode very soon.
Chaos gets a turn in with the Thousand Sons mod providing a happy christmas and, after the new year started, a rather huge screenshot with detailed texture and model work, from their mod thread (which, for some reason, trails off into the styles of boots later on in the thread…sorry, make that sexy female boots, or something…)
Yet more space marine action, this time the Blood Angels mod shows off a christmas update of Death Company marines, then later an ingame Mephiston (Still a work in progress) and Commander Dante (twice)and Honor Guard in their mod thread. A hefty amount of work being done from them, for sure.
Not to be left out, SW 13th company, has provided updates of their model progress and techtree and concepts which I missed in the last newsletter.
For those wanting some released models, Closer To Codex Models provides some downloads and a lot of activity working with exsisting models and new material to alter how things look and perform according to the tabletop Codex books. Technically, this isn’t going to ever be a complete or working standalone mod, but the modders want to provide stuff for everyone to use. I can only provide a few of the most recent set of screenshots, such as Dark Angels, released random Space Marine helmets, plague marine chapions and other space marine units. I don’t want to leave out the Chaos marines and Eldar, and will include them_apples Ork Battlewagon too. Check the thread for many more model screenshots.
Dawn of War Rebirth, a balance and fluff mod, also are planning to add various things to the game, including Chaos Land Raiders, and read up on their thread for other balance and fluff changes.
Lastly, we have the Dark Eldar mod team providing neat short synckill animation movies for veiwing, as well as of course providing our next page - an interview with them and lots of shots of their work!
