Homeworld: Play as a Group

I would like to take the time to invite you to a first time event! Homeworld: Play as a Group. Join fellow Homeworlders, the weekend of July 27th and 28th, as we once again battle our way to the Homeworld… this time as a Group! Several of the Relic Forum goers are attending, and hopefully some of the Relic folk will pop in and observe us enjoying their game 3 years after the fact. New players, or people that have never played Homeworld are welcome to join in as well!

Why do we want to do this again?

After seeing that several people on the Relic forums had never actually completed Homeworld, I brought up the idea of a collective playing of Homeworld in this thread. The basic idea was to get us all together and hang out to play Homeworld and to share the great experience the game is. Besides, this is as close to Cooperatively playing the Single Player game that you can get!

When and Where?

On the weekend of July 27th to 28th, starting at 7am PST (that’s 3pm GMT), Homeworlders are invited to gather online on the IRC Chat server us.austnet.org, channel #HWPAAG. Feel free to spin off to sub channels, that main one will be just so everyone can meet and coordinate other aspects of the weekend’s ‘festivities’. Maybe if it’s a big hit, we will expand next time and get together for a LAN weekend :-)

What will we be doing?

The idea is that everyone starts playing Homeworld through at roughly the same time. Starting at around 7am PST (3pm GMT) on Saturday morning, we’ll all head off and start playing from level 1. Everyone can take breaks between levels, coming back to IRC to talk about he experience, or simply keep playing. After each level, there will be an upload provided so that people showing up late can join in and meet us partway or folks can use them to bypass a level. Hopefully, everyone will be able to get to see things and levels they’ve not gotten to before. I know some people that never got past level 5. Now’s our chance to help them see the rest of the game!

Gamers that don’t want to play the single player campaign are welcome to join us for chat, Skirmish vs CPU or to get some Multiplayer action. This will be a great time to come and meet people that love Homeworld and want to talk shop. Heck, you do not even have to play. Feel free to pop in, check out the atmosphere, and stay a while. Perhaps some new Armadas will be formed, new friendships begun or old partnerships picked up where they left off. Heck, some people might even get inspired to make their own HW mod!

Here is a few of ideas for people to try out if they have previously finished the game but want to play through again.

  1. If you played through as Kushan, try the game as Taiidan and vice versa.
  2. If you played with mostly strike craft last time, play without them this time.
  3. If you played with mostly cap ships, play without them this time.
  4. If you salvaged a lot last time, don’t this time.
  5. Play through with a mod (Like JAL-18’s True Scale Mod).
  6. Play with a new color scheme! Oh the fun!
  7. Use something like Roger Wilco, or Game Voice share to hook up and talk to your buddies while playing.
  8. Try to play through without losing a ship.
  9. Play naked!

What else do I need to know?

Before you show up on Saturday, make sure you do the following things. First, make sure Homeworld’s installed and patched to the 1.05 version (Download from Sierra.com or logon to WON to get it). Second, make sure you have an IRC Client (http://www.mirc.co.uk). Third, if you’ve not played in a while, run through the tutorial again to familiarize yourself with the game. Fourth, make sure you find your most comfortable outfit, a few of your favorite beverages, and make yourself comfortable!

If you have any other questions I’ve not answered, or you feel I’ve missed something, drop me a line!

I hope to see you there this weekend!
